I recently had to change my cell phone provider due to lack of reception in my apartment with T-mobile. After making the Verizon switch I heavily considered my options: Get a Blackberry Tour, get a Motorola Droid running Google's Android OS or hold out for Verizon to get an iphone. I ended up going with the Droid and after a couple months have no doubts that I made the right decision.
While I love the Mac OS and their computers, I've always wrangled with Apple's approach to the mobile market -- which is a proprietary closed application marketplace. If there's one thing I love about the Android mobile OS is it's openess to developers, it's unrestricted nature and subsequently it's exciting possibilities.
This week Google really gave Apple's App store "the finger" so to speak. Check out this really interesting article by Business Insider. Google has essentially made a mobile web version of Google Voice so iPhone users can access it by circumventing the Application store altogether.
With all the hype around the iPad (another closed marketplace I really feel threatens the "free web" in a very scary way), I really applaud Google in their approach. I hope they continue to focus on the web as a platform for all mobile devices. I'm glad I don't need a Mac or a PC to view particular websites online. I hope it never ends up that way.
